Neuro Nourishing Schools Support Everyone!
My name is Karmen and I’m mum to a 5 year old neuro-fabulous SEN-Betweener. He started school this year in Edinburgh - the lowest funded local authority in Scotland. I’ve set up Neuro Schools Scotland to create a searchable map of neuro safe schools. Here’s how you can help us and yourself.
About Our Guy
He’s a smart, gentle, inquisitive and empathetic character.
He lives for a good chat, scenic location and chilled vibes.
He is also a low support needs autistic child (we suspect. Sitting on a waitlist for that diagnosis IYKYK). He’s a ‘SEN-Betweener’. He’s actually a pretty easy kid. Polite and funny. Definitely smarter than us.
He’s learned all the rules for polite society but kids don’t operate in polite society. Adult interactions are easier. In fact, his adult life will be easier. He needs to survive school first.
We had a great nursery; Montessori, low stimulus, outdoor, free flow, switched on staff. He made friends, he was happy. Then the management changed and nursery changed. It became more chaotic. Our little guy was an anxious mess. That’s when we realised how much environment mattered to his existence.
We did all the things before he went to school. Deferred entry, 2 years of contact with the school. Shared paediatric reports, notes, OT, social stories. School knew who they were getting. By day 2 we were already keeping him home. That’s right, the child who needs no accommodations outside of school didn’t last 2 days in school. The environment is just TOO MUCH.
Basically our kid is a quiet pub guy and we’ve signed him up for the music festival IYSWIM.
